Our philosophy and vision "always one idea ahead"

entails quality at the highest level. To satisfy this standard, we:

  1. formulate clear objectives in consultation with our clients
  2. align every work step with these goals
  3. apply innovative analysis and evaluation techniques
  4. verify the plausibility of all collected data
  5. reach exceptional solutions by out-of-the-box thinking

Contaminated sites

Schadstoffkonzentration und Pumprate

Our experience worth over 25 years revealed that still a considerable amount of money has been invested without observing a satisfactory and sustainable improvement. However, increased knowledge and new remediation techniques today allow for more economically efficient solutions. If propagation pathways of contaminants are sufficiently well-known, natural retardation and degradation processes can be evaluated and used for site remediation. With a thorough and rigorous data acquisition and evaluation, costs can be cut in most cases – whether during site investigation or in the course of reviewing ongoing remediation measures.

Brownfield redevelopment

Planung Arnulfpark

Potential soil and groundwater contaminations are important factors to consider during land acquisition, sale or redevelopment, such as revitalisation of former industrial, business or transit areas. A professional and realistic assessment of cost risks due to contamination is, therefore, extremely important for the economic success of a project. We support clients and investors in evaluating the risks associated with the acquisition or sale of contaminated sites. Our services include site investigation, technical and economic assessment of the situation (due diligence phase I, II & III), planning and monitoring of deconstruction and remediation measures, as well as evaluation of experts’ reports of any other party involved.

Groundwater

Hydraulische Durchlässigkeitszonen

Our hydrogeological services go far beyond issues related to contaminated sites and comprise all aspects of groundwater exploration, protection and modelling. We have extensive experience in the field of hydraulic characterization of porous and fractured aquifers (aquifer diagnosis) and application of high-resolution trace substances and isotope methods – essential tools for identifying contamination sources in complex settings. We also provide support to clients and consultants concerning the choice and dimensioning of appropriate infiltration systems that can also be combined with rainwater utilization systems.

Groundwater Modelling

Ausbreitung der Temperatur im Grundwasser

By means of computer-aided numerical modelling, we provide solutions to address a broad range of questions related to:

  1. Assessment of groundwater contamination risk
  2. Design of hydraulic remediation techniques
  3. Evaluating the remediation potential of natural attenuation (NA)
  4. Delineation of drinking water protection areas
  5. Design of dewatering systems
  6. Design and assessment of geothermal projects
  7. Quantification of uncertainty in all these types of prognoses (UQ, Monte Carlo)

Owing to the broad spectrum of project sites all around Germany and the associated model applications, we have extensive experience in simulating flow and transport processes even under complex circumstances (e.g. fractured porous media). To arrive at the right solution, we tailor the abstraction level and model size to the problem scale. For example, it can be favourable to describe mass transfer processes through the foundation of an underground parking garage in terms of a small-scale, one-dimensional model. On the other hand, studying overlapping contaminant plumes interfering with construction dewatering or sewer system, makes larger-scale, two- or three-dimensional models indispensable. Also, the choice of steady-state vs. transient modelling approaches is made in view of the project goals. Using statistical and GIS-based tools during all steps of modelling facilitates the processing and interpretation of data and decision making. We have close bonds to different universities and make use of scientific innovations, e.g. in the field of considering uncertainty in prognoses (sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification, stochastic modelling). Also, we offer consulting in evaluating merits and limits of existing models and support clients in deciding whether and which type of model could be useful for their specific task at hand.
